Leapfrog Training
Learn how Leapfrog was meant to be used from the conceptual founder of Leapfrog
Leapfrog software was designed as a practical geological tool to be used daily by geologists in the exploration and mining industries (see leapfrog3d.com). Leapfrog departs from the time-consuming CAD-based methods of all other generalised mining packages. Leapfrog represents a revolutionary breakthrough in modelling technique as the software is able to geologically model directly from drillhole data without the need for tedious sectional digitisation. Geological models can be generated in hours. Prestologic can show you how to model efficiently because we have the most practical experience with the software. Leapfrog foundation tutorial sessions
Leapfrog basics can be learned by taking a two-day tutorial session. Details can be changed according to need, but familiarity with the basics is required for competent use of Leapfrog to model directly from drillhole data.
A typical two-day program is listed below:
Day 1
Morning (4 hours)
- Introduction to Leapfrog
- Importing drillhole data
- Compositing and desurveying
- Default isotropic interpolation
- Domaining using the topography dataset
- Minimum distance interpolant and how it can be effectively used in exploration and mine modelling
- Nested domaining
- Applying anisotropy to the data and what it means
- Leapfrog’s fast drawing tool
- Advanced interpolation settings and when and how to use them
- Importance of object symmetry and how it relates to structural and geological interpretation
- Projection technique of grade data visualisation
Afternoon (4 hours)
- Leapfrog grade interpolation basics using other example datasets
- Determining the axial orientation of a deposit using the projection technique
- Modelling using the fast drawing tool
- Fast grade estimation in Leapfrog 2
- Grade interpolation and targeting exercises
- Geological interpretation and modelling exercises
Day 2
Morning (4 hours)
- The principles of lithological modelling in Leapfrog
- Classifying lithological data in Leapfrog
- Lithological code data filtering
- Controlling lithological contacts with the drawing tool
- Introduction to vein modelling
- Introduction to structural trend modelling for grade and lithological modelling
Afternoon (4 hours)
- Lithological modelling excercises
- Client data modelling
Advanced Leapfrog tutorial sessions
Advanced tutorial sessions of Leapfrog can be arranged in addition to the two days of basic training. These sessions can be used to model data provided by the client and to resolve practical exploration and mining problems. Contact us about the benefits of advanced Leapfrog tutorial sessions. Pictured below are some companies who participated in advanced tutorial sessions.

Newmont Asia Pacific hosts semi-regular Leapfrog training for their geologists. In November 2011 a group of geologists attended a show and tell workshop to explain how they modelled their deposits. Jun advised them how to improve their workflow and improve geological and structural understanding of their deposits.

In 2010 MSc students from University of Tasmania learned how to operate Leapfrog, then built 13 separate lithological and grade models of Goldcorp's Red Lake gold deposit in three days (using "The Challenge" competition data from 10 years ago). The students presented their exploration ideas at the end of the workshop. Ten years ago this rapid workflow simply would not have been possible, as it would have taken an entire year to build a single hand-digitised model. Needless to say, Leapfrog software is now very popular at this university.
